The Las Vegas Philharmonic announced the winners for their
annual Young
Artist Competition on Nov. 8. Some of the best students in
the valley
auditioned on Nov. 5 at the College of Southern Nevada. Assistant
Conductor Richard McGee, Principal Trumpet Tom Wright and
Second Oboist
Joan McGee were judges at the competition. Although all the
competitors
were very talented and showed great musicality, only four
winners could be
named.
Nikita
Hudong, 12, from Del Webb Middle School played the
violin solo from
Lalo’s Symphonie Espangole, second movement. |
Sara
Kantor, 15, a harpist at the Adelson School, won with
the third movement from Glière’s Harp
Concerto. |
Yuhi
Kim, 16, from Nevada State High School auditioned with
Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, first movement. |
Lauren
Chao, 17,
from Green Valley High School performed the third movement of Ibert’s
Flute Concerto. |
“Working towards this competition really
helped me grow as a musician,”
said Chao.
All the winners will be featured in the Las
Vegas Philharmonic’s Youth
Concert Series in January. Concert dates and performers are:
January 11, 10:15 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.
Nikita Haduong, violin soloist: Lalo, Symphonie Espagnole,
2nd movement
January 14, 10:15 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.
Lauren Chao, flute soloist: Ibert Flute Concerto, 3rd, movement
January 15, 10:15 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.
Sara Kantor, harp soloist: Glière Harp Concerto, 3rd
movement
January 16, 10:15 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.
Yuhi Kim, violin soloist: Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, 1st
